One Small Victory – DIY Hand Sanitiser Recipe

I’m on a mission this year to detox the world.  Ambitious I know, it oughta keep me out of the fridge at least.

I’m starting with my own personal-world, and boy is there work to do.  Since having a baby, everywhere I look, I see potential danger. BPA in plastics leeching into foods, toxins in household cleaning products getting soaked up by baby lungs, chemicals in carpets, furniture, beauty products…argggghhh…literally everywhere. We’re surrounded.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed of course. So I’m taking it slow.  One small change at a time.

The latest discovery on my natural-living mission is that antibacterial soaps, and those antibacterial hand-sanitisers…well, they aren’t so good (basically, you should probably assume everything is bad for you unless proven otherwise!!).

They are so bad that the FDA, who aren’t exactly known for being on the ball about these sorts of things, have told manufacturers who make these products that they have to prove that the antibacterial chemical in them is actually helpful or they have to stop selling it in the next couple of years.

But why wait until then. Let’s cut this stuff loose from our home environments TODAY.  Carpe diem!

Just wash your hands with good old fashioned soap and water. And make your own natural hand sanitiser for when you’re on the go.

Make Your Own Hand Sanitiser

Making your own hand sanitiser couldn’t be easier.

What you’ll need:

  • A small jar and spray top. I re-used an old essential oil bottles and just purchased the spray-top
  • Tablespoon of aloe vera (I have plants at home, so easy to keep and they come in useful for lots of DIY beauty products)
  • 10 drops of a good essential oil that has disinfecting properties (e.g. lemon, teatree, lime, cinnamon, peppermint, thyme, on guard) I used the On Guard Protective Blend as the combination of oils was designed for this sort of thing.
  • Water

Add the aloe vera gel, then the essential oil, shake well and fill the rest of the jar with water.

Done. You are ready to rock.
