I first came across the concept of minimalism when I was feeling a bit down, and, as you do in our modern age, googled ‘how to be happier’.
Google as ever served up the goods and pointed me to minimalism, the conscious decision to live with only what we love and need, to free up space and energy in our lives for greater joy.
If our space is ‘constipated’ with stuff from our past, stuff that doesn’t serve us or bring joy, then we can’t truly get in the flow of life. There’s no space for new things and experiences to enter. This is feng shui in a nutshell. The Chinese art of placing things in right order, to allow good energy to circulate throughout our homes and lives.
One of my all time favourite ‘stuff’ mentors, Marie Kondo, notes in her book The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up, that the act of confronting our stuff is really the act of confronting ourselves and deciding how we want to live today and in the future.
Here’s some snippets from this life changing book (which I recommend you read) to get you in the mood for our fun challenge.
“The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.”
“When we really delve into the reasons for why we can’t let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past, or a fear for the future.”
“When your room is clean and uncluttered, you have no choice but to examine your inner state.”
“Keep only the things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest.”
